Hanoi, Vietnam
15 – 19 October 2013

STORIES, PICTURES & RESULTS

130 golfers teed off at the Ballantine’s Team-Am Golf Challenge 4 in Hanoi from Oct 15th – 19th 2013. The first round at King’s Island on 16th October began with an overcast sky, making for great golfing weather. Golfers took the short ferry to reach King’s Island and enjoyed its fabulous setting, layout and slick greens.

At the end of the 1st round, Pune Titans, last year’s champions – ably captained by Ikram Khan and fellow team members, Aditya Deshmukh, Sanjay Naik and Anant Pandit, were holding on to their title at 107 Net Stableford points, with each of their consistent performances contributing to their Team as well as Individual scores. Loudmouth 1 from Mumbai and the Seven Hills team, Hyderabad were tied at the second position with 105 points. The competition got more interesting with the Birdie Machines, Mumbai at 104 points.

The Individual Gross Winner at King’s Island, Ramana Reddy of Hyderabad Golf Association, took the lead at 31 points and the Individual Net Winner for the King’s Island was Vijay Mohan of Noida Golf Club with 40 points.

By the second day, the effects of storm that had hit Vietnam was taking effect and golfers had to tee off in a heavy drizzle. Despite this, the beautiful settings at Tam Dao and the competitive spirits which had set in, kept the golfers enthusiasm high and raring to go.

The course conditions were fabulous despite the rain and the day saw some amazing rounds of golf from several golfers. The difficult conditions, however considerably slowed down the pace of play and the early onset of dusk and poor visibility forced suspension of play and eventual cancellation of the 2nd round. So, while this was a dampener, everybody had put in a round of at least 16 holes and walked into the clubhouse with broad smiles satisfied with their efforts.

The best was saved for the last and golfers approaching in the bus were greeted by the spectacular sight of the towering limestone cliffs of Phoenix, shrouded by low-lying clouds and mist.

Golfers teed off on the Champion Course of this massive 54-hole world-class championship golfing facility, again in a slight drizzle. Very soon, the monster course started claiming many victims with its narrow fairways and postage stamp greens.

However, the highlight of the day was a stellar performance by all the four golfers of the Famous Fore team from Hyderabad who really kept their heads down and cracked the power play holes with net birdies and net eagles.

The Famous Fore – Chinna Babu, Jayant Tagore, Prasad Rao and Vikram Pamarthi took home the Ballantine’s Team-Am Golf Challenge 4 title with 228 Net Stableford Points. Last year’s champions, the Pune Titans came in second with 211 points. The third position saw a very tight and neck-to-neck battle between Birdie Machines (Mumbai), Loudmouth 1 (Mumbai) and Seven Hills (Hyderabad). But Birdie Machines surged ahead by a close margin to win the Second Runner Up team prize with 204 points.

Few of the younger stalwarts like Chirag Shah of Pune and former National Volley Ball Player, Manohar Reddy came up with great rounds of golf on this crucial final day.

The Gross Stableford competition saw a tie between Chirag Shah and N Chinna Babu, both at 54 points but Chirag emerged the champion owing to better points in the final round. N.Chinna Babu who had had a superb tournament overall was the Overall Gross Stableford Runner Up.

The Individual Net Stableford category saw Vijay Mohan from NCR lead the race with 76 points. The Runner Up prize was heavily contested between V Sreenath Rao, Saket Batra and Sanjay Kamtam, all who scored 70 points but V.Sreenath Rao lay claim to the prize, by virtue of higher points in the last round.

Chris Chatterjee, BPGC, Mumbai was the Senior Net Stableford Winner with a solid 67 points and Neel Kamal Chopra of Chandigarh was adjudged the Best Lady Golfer of the tournament.

B.Manohar Reddy, Hyderabad had a phenomenal round at Phoenix on the 18th and won both the Gross as well as the Net Stableford Prizes for the day.

Despite the wet weather on day 2 and 3, the Ballantine’s Team-Am Golf Challenge 4 was a huge success with a perfect composition of courses, smooth operations and exciting Ballantine’s evenings.

On the 16th, the group was hosted at Sen Tay Ho, a traditional Vietnamese restaurant (complimented by the Ballantine’s bar) where the spread of dishes was mind-boggling and exotic to say the least. The second Ballantine’s evening was at The Bank, a swish nightclub & pub. The prize distribution and gala dinner on 18th Oct at the Crowne Plaza West Hanoi opened up with a hip band playing the crowd’s favourites and the evening ended with thumping cheers and applause for all the winners.
